Frequently Asked Questions
What is Penny?

Penny is a personal finance app that helps you track your income and spending. Whenever you chat with Penny, she shares important and fun information about your finances with you. She makes it simple and easy to save money and budget (but only if you want to 😉).

How does Penny work?

Penny accesses your statement history—with your permission—and uses that information to help you manage your finances. Whenever you open the app, she'll chat with you about your finances: letting you know how you're doing this month, forecasting where you'll be next month, giving you a heads up about upcoming bills, or even helping you cancel services you don't use. She gets smarter every day!

What makes Penny different from other apps?

Penny makes your finances less intimidating and stressful. Many apps have lots of useful features, but they're often hard to use and time-consuming. Penny automatically organizes your finances, explains them simply and clearly, and tells you what you need to know, when you need to know it.

Signing Up
Where can I download Penny?

You can download the iPhone app here and the Android app here. You can also find it on either store by searching for "Penny".

Does Penny work for my bank?

Penny supports over 10,000 banks in the United States, so if your bank is in the U.S., she can probably connect to it. She can even connect to your PayPal account! 💸

Does Penny work with banks located outside the United States?

For now, Penny only supports banks in the United States. 😞

Can I use Penny without connecting a bank account?

Unfortunately, Penny needs to connect to your bank account so that she can automatically retrieve and organize your transactions.

Can I close my account?

You can close your account at any time: just hit Give Feedback in the app or shoot us an email. When you do, we permanently erase all of your data—Penny won't even remember your first name or email.

Security
Is Penny secure?

Yes! The Penny app is completely safe. Penny uses bank-grade security to protect your financial information. Penny never stores your bank login information and nobody can move your money with Penny—not even you! 🔒

Why does Penny need my bank login information?

Penny uses your bank login information to establish a connection with your bank, so that she can automatically retrieve and organize your transactions.

Does Penny store my bank login information?

Penny never stores your bank login information. After she first establishes the connection to your bank, she gets a separate, secret access code to retrieve your transactions from your bank. That way, she can access your transactions without ever needing your bank account credentials again.

What does Penny do with my data?

Penny uses your data to help you better understand your finances. Your personal financial data is not and will never be sold to third parties. Penny does share limited personal data such as your name and email with services like customer support to better assist you. You can read about this more in our Privacy Policy. If you have any questions about it, don't hesitate to ask!

Fees
Is Penny free?

Penny is 100% free to download and use. There are no charges for any reason. 🙌

How do you make money?

Right now, we make money through donations and by partnering with financial products that we think you might find worthwhile. You can find out more about our partnerships here. Both the donations and partnerships allow us to continue offering Penny's services for free.

We also offer a membership called Penny+. Joining Penny+ gets you more categories, real-time balance updates, custom bill tracking, and other useful features!
